Than Shwe

Senior General Than Shwe is a Burmese military leader and politician who was chairman of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) from 1992 to 2011. SPDC was the name of the former State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC), established in 1988. He was the late 1980s the central figure in Burma's ruling military junta. He was held various positions of power that rendered him head of state; these include Commander-in-Chief of the Tatmadaw, head of Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA). He relinquished power in 2011 in favor of Thein Sein, former Prime Minister. On 15 March 2011, Than Shwe became head of the State Supreme Council, an eight-member advisory body which is not mandated in the 2008 Constitution, consisting of other current State Peace and Development Council members, including Shwe Mann and Maung Aye. » Read more on Wikipedia.org
